Arm today announced the Arm Total Solutions for IoT. This unique approach to IoT design will lay the foundation for a new IoT economy. Arm IoT Total Solutions will simplify and enable modern software development, accelerating development for developers, OEMs and service providers at every stage of the IoT value chain, reducing product design cycles by up to two years.
“By revolutionizing the way systems are designed, Arm is uniquely positioned to drive a new IoT economy whose shape, speed and scale are comparable to the smartphone application market economy,” said Mohamed Awad, vice president of Arm’s IoT and Embedded Group. Comparable. The Arm IoT Total Solution transforms the way we deliver key technologies across the ecosystem and demonstrates our significant and ongoing investment in software that empowers developers to innovate and expand global reach.”
New virtual hardware target reduces product design cycles by up to two years
Arm IoT Total Solutions are based on the proven Arm Corstone™, a set of proven, pre-integrated subsystems that have accelerated time-to-market for more than 150 designs by Arm chip partners. Arm IoT Total Solutions brings Arm Virtual Hardware Targets to software developers, OEMs, and service providers. This new cloud-based service provides a virtual model of the Corstone subsystem, eliminating the need for software development based on The physical chip is carried out. Arm Virtual Hardware brings modern and agile software development methods to IoT and embedded platforms, including continuous integration/continuous development (CI/CD), DevOps and MLOps, without investing in complex hardware farms.
Through accurate models of Arm-based SoCs that provide mechanisms for simulating memory and peripherals, software development and testing can now begin before chips are complete. As a result, typical product design cycles can range from an average of five years to a maximum of shortened to three years. This allows Arm chip partners to obtain customer feedback on the chip before the chip is taped out, while assisting the entire IoT value chain, and can easily develop and test code based on the latest IP before the chip is released.
Arm virtual hardware is available now on AWS Marketplace, with a planned launch in China in 2022. Arm’s partners are using this technology to accelerate innovation and speed time-to-market.
Simplify the development process by designing for use cases
Arm IoT Total Solutions is a complete set of solutions designed for specific use cases, allowing developers to focus on what really matters, which is innovation and differentiation across different applications and devices. It has everything you need to simplify the design process and product development, including hardware IP, software, machine learning models, advanced tools such as new virtual hardware targets, application-specific reference code, and sources from the world’s largest IoT ecosystem support.
The first configuration of Arm’s comprehensive IoT solution is available for use cases in general computing and machine learning workloads, including an example of machine learning-based keyword recognition. At the same time, virtual hardware targets are in place to support multiple configurations from Arm chip partners based on the Arm Corstone-300 subsystem, which combines the Cortex™-M55 processor with the Arm Ethos™-U55 micro-neural network processor. Arm is committed to taking a comprehensive solution as an approach and drawing a strong future product plan through a complete product roadmap, which covers applications such as speech recognition and object recognition.
Standardization is the key to scaling
To enable industry partners to leverage the software and services they have invested in the broadest platform, Arm is also launching Project Centauri, which aims to provide a set of device and platform standards and reference implementations for device boot, security and cloud integration , for the broad Arm Cortex-M software ecosystem, to achieve a similar contribution to the Cortex-A ecosystem by Project Cassini.
Project Centauri’s API includes support for PSA certification and Open-CMSIS-CDI, a set of standard cloud-to-device specifications that minimize the development effort required to launch different cloud solutions and real-time operating systems. Project Centauri will reduce engineering development costs, accelerate time-to-market, enable large-scale IoT deployments, and strengthen the security of the Cortex-M ecosystem.
Leading the Ecosystem into the New IoT Era
Chip shipments based on the Arm Cortex-M architecture have so far exceeded 70 billion and are still growing. According to Mordor Intelligence, the average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of IoT chips will reach nearly 15% in 2026. To capitalize on this growth opportunity, Arm is focused on ensuring that the ecosystem continues to be at the forefront of accelerating IoT innovation by expanding the availability of Arm IP to make Arm IoT comprehensive solutions available to businesses of all types and including Arm. Innovate with projects including Flexible Access.
Arm IoT Total Solutions represent the beginning of a new era of IoT – an era where software and hardware are truly co-designed at the system level. Arm is uniquely positioned to unite software and hardware developers to create scenario-defining computing and unlock the economics of the Internet of Things. Regardless of where computing occurs, from smartphones to data centers to the current Internet of Things, taking systems into account in the design process will be key to accelerating innovation and taking full advantage of the dedicated processing power provided by the Arm ecosystem.
